Heart Healthy Snacking

February is American Heart Month. According to the American Heart Association, uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, vision loss and heart failure. Making heart-healthy changes to your diet and consulting your doctor can help you and your senior loved one stay healthy. One way to change eating habits is to choose healthy snacks that are low in calories and salt.

Crunchy Snacks Good For Your Heart

Seniors who have in home senior care may have a variety of health issues.  Still, you can provide munchies with crunch when you plan ahead. Fresh fruits and vegetables make great snacks, but you may need to roast them or cut them into small pieces to make it easier for seniors to chew. Rice cakes or whole grain crackers are a filling choice. Add a serving of hummus or low-fat cottage cheese for increased protein and satisfaction. Cherry tomatoes and canned tuna or salmon is another healthy snack that has a lot of great nutrients for seniors.

Choose Healthy Drinks

Seniors are at a greater risk for dehydration than other adults. Drinks that are high in sugar aren’t good for anyone. Water can get boring on its own. Choose a sparkling water for a nice change of pace. Infuse it with fresh fruit for added flavor. Unsweetened herbal teas, either hot or cold, can tempt the taste buds. Low-sodium tomato juice or 100% fruit juices, in small portions, can encourage someone to drink more.

Selecting Sweet Snacks That Are Healthy

Let’s face it, everyone likes something sweet now and then. The key is looking for snacks without added sugar and fats. Bake an apple with cinnamon and oats. A thin slice of angel food cake with fresh berries is a welcome treat any time of year. Select a variety of fresh fruits and make a colorful salad. Freeze bananas or mangos and make a smoothie with almond or low-fat milk. Canned fruit in natural juice can be served with low-fat yogurt for a nice treat.
